Why is it so special?

• Todmorden Moor is invaluable unfenced peat and grass moorland used by man since the Bronze Age


• It is 720 acres of open moorland starting less than two miles from Todmorden town centre.


• It is an Urban Common where Commoners graze their stock and everyone has the right to use the whole area for "quiet recreation".



• The Flower Scar Project, completed in 2007, is providing valuable information for future work to prevent illegal tipping in the unfenced areas of our countryside.  These are areas where monitoring and prosecutions are almost impossible to achieve. A more interventionist strategy was required as a matter of urgency, because illegal tipping increases as Landfill Tax rises year on year, and Council rubbish collections reduce.

  We are finding that cleaning up the moorland and encouraging natural re-growth is already bringing people back to enjoy this area of open moorland for informal recreation. Walkers, horse riders, model aircraft fliers and cyclists are increasing the use of the moor for recreation which also helps to keep tippers at bay. It is no longer a neglected, spoiled piece of moorland. We are reclaiming it for people and for wildlife.
